Food Addiction

You probably knew snacks and junk food made you gain weight. But, did you know what is hidden in many processed foods that is as addicting to the receptors of the brain as Opium? A good reason to avoid wheat products altogether. Have you noticed you have cravings for sweets and junk food?

Sometimes, it seems we can’t control ourselves. It’s almost like something else takes control. And, there’s a good reason.

Snack foods are addictive. They pay their scientists to make them addictive so you’ll keep eating more and buying it again and again. They want to have regular customers and make money…

That is something I call ‘Junk Food addiction.’ You see billboards and TV commercials all day long tempting you.

We pass a multitude of fast food establishments serving hamburgers, hot dogs, tacos and about everything you can imagine. It smells good. How can food hurt us? How can you resist eating those things that smell good and taste great! Good question…

How can a hamburger, ice cream or cookies be all that bad? There is scientific proof going back decades…

Overcoming Culture

It’s the Standard American Diet we’ve all grown up on. It includes all those Holiday dinners we’ve had for generations. Who can resist a Turkey Dinner? Don’t forget that Ham and Buttered Mashed Potatoes and Gravy! How about Desert? But, what happens to you after you stuff yourself? Acid indigestion? Constipation? Is it worth it? At the time we eat it, we feel fulfilled. But, it’s the after that many of us regret. Yet, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t look forward to those big Holiday dinners. I know I do, but I try to limit how much and what I eat.

I don’t think we change until we get some disease, ailment or condition. If you are happy and healthy, why would you want to change? It’s when you begin suffering from some disease, ailment or condition that either puts you in the hospital, causes you a lot of discomfort and pain, or keeps you seeing your doctor every week. It might get you thinking what it is you are doing wrong. And, unfortunately, it’s not a pill or operation that’s goanna cure you, either. The easiest most permanent fix is a change in lifestyle. That’s when you decide to base what you eat on a whole food plant based diet. Prevent ill health from developing in the first place. Prevention is truly the cure…

A few Tips which might help you keep Focus on Weight Loss and Healthier Living

    1. Don’t shop at the grocery store when you are hungry. We buy stuff we know we shouldn’t when we are hungry at the store. Eat before you go. If you don’t buy it and it’s not around the house, chances are you won’t go out and buy it.
    2. Get rid of all junk food in the house. If it comes in a bag, box or can, it’s likely processed food filled to the brim with excess salt, sugar and fat. If it’s not there, you can’t eat it whenever you get those cravings.
    3. When you get the craving for sweets, chips (any processed carbs) or fatty snacks, train yourself to go for fruit. Keep plenty around the house. If you fall off the wagon and eat a candy bar, make sure you eat a piece of fruit along with it. It can help counter the candy so you don’t eat more of it. Fruits are simple carbohydrates and easy to digest. The fiber keeps the sugar from elevating your blood sugar too high.
    4. When you crave something salty, eat vegetables. Bake a potato or eat beans. You probably crave micronutrients in the form of vegetables like steamed broccoli or a green salad.
    5. Eat healthy carbs in whole foods like Baked Potatoes, Brown Rice and Beans
    6. If you get back into your old eating habits, keep trying. Get back on tract. We are all human and there’s food temptation everywhere. Hopefully, you will have a partner who will support vegetarian eating habits.
    7. Have you ever been able to eat just one potato chip, spoonful of ice cream, one sip of soda pop, etc.? You can’t. There’s a reason. It’s addictive. Food addiction is real. Remember, just because something tastes good doesn’t mean it is good for you in the long term.
    8. When you eat vegetarian, you don’t keep eating it like a bag of chips. You feel satisfied and not hungry after you eat. You are eating whole food with fiber. It fills you up and you are not hungry an hour later because your blood sugar crashed.
    9. You lose weight on a whole food plant based diet. A vegetarian diet is low calorie and high fiber. Be patient. It will take time to change your diet. It’s a lifestyle choice. Remember, you will lose weight and get healthier on a vegetarian diet.
    10. Try to limit your portions on the Holidays. There’s no need to give everyone a health food lecture. Everyone is touchy about their food. We don’t want to offend grandma or auntie.
    11. You may need to seek professional help for food addiction. Gastric bypass surgery should be last resort.
    12. Always seek your doctor’s advice when changing your diet or undertaking any weight loss regimen.
