You might have heard about an alkaline diet. But, what is it, really? Is it healthy? Will it help you lose weight? There are lists of alkaline and acid foods to eat, but which ones do you eat and avoid? Our bodies have a natural healthy pH which is slightly on the alkaline side at somewhere around 7.30 to 7.45.
Did you know that cancers apparently thrive in an acidic pH and that if your system gets too acidic, you can actually die? Here’s a helpful list I found that can assist in picking alkaline foods over the acidic: List of_Acid-Alkaline_Forming_Foods
It is interesting to note that health problems like inflammation seemingly come from consuming dairy, meat, oils, sugar and grains. Snack foods, as we all know are not healthy. They also have fats, sugar and salt (salt can be inflammatory to our body.)
Things get complicated and confusing because many sources claiming facts about the benefits of an alkaline diet through avoidance of acidic foods conflict with each other [1 ncbi.nlm.nih.gov].
Yet, most importantly, one must trust his body when it comes to what he eats by examining how he feels after eating.
For example, I know oats are acidic and seem to always cause acid reflux or gerd in me. I have tested them many times. So, I have come to the conclusion I can’t eat it anymore. Did you know that acid from your stomach can back up into your mouth and cause damage to your teeth?
As I look at the acid forming food list, I see things that cause me harm soon after I eat them. They all have one thing in common. They are all acid forming. There’s refined oils, certain fruits, most whole grains, dairy, some nuts and nut butters, animal protein, pasta and bread, beans and legumes in excess and finally, vinegar.
Lower acid fruits…
- Avocados (yes, it’s a fruit)
Low acid vegetables…
- Asparagus broccoli
- Collard greens
- Brussels sprouts
I call myself a plant based whole foodist. I eat mainly vegetables, fruit, nuts, grains like brown rice, quinoa and beans and potatoes. Hopefully, the alkaline in my diet balances out the acidity in the grains, legumes and tubers. I am my own human (health and weight loss through diet) experiment in progress. What I eat.
