Is gluten bad for you? Wheat has gotten a good and bad rap. They say wheat fiber is good for you. But, did you know that every type of grain has its own gluten? Did you also know that grain is not very nutritious, that’s why they add vitamins and minerals to processed cereals. They also have to add salt, sugar and oil to make it palatable. Have you ever eaten plain old bread with nothing on it, boxed cereal or oatmeal without sugar?
People can be sensitive to gluten. They call this gluten sensitivity. Wheat’s gluten is called gliadin which is a big problem for some of us. Although, celiac disease and gluten sensitivity are not the same thing.
Most people with gluten sensitivity don’t have celiac disease. Here’s just a sample of symptoms and diseases associated with gluten…
- Chrohn’s disease
- Irritable bowl syndrome
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Bodily aches and pains
- Migraine headaches
- Leaky gut syndrome
- Weight gain
- And, many more…
You can get tested for gluten sensitivity (intolerance,) but the tests can be flawed. Furthermore, you can still have all the symptoms when you are on a so called gluten free diet. You can develop autoimmune diseases and even though you think you have no gluten in your diet, it still could be an ingredient.
There are so many products on the market that are supposed to be gluten free, it’s kind of a joke. They are very overpriced and may certainly not be truly gluten free. It’s a billion dollar industry, and they are making a lot of money off those who think they are getting totally gluten free products. Many of these foods are highly processed with added chemicals. You could become much worse off health wise consuming these, causing you to become even more diseased or ill.
These supposed gluten free products usually take their form as cakes, cookies, processed cereals, and crackers, etc. How would one ever get well eating these? You might think the only culprits would only be wheat, barley, rye, and oats. But, you’d be wrong. Corn gluten (among many other grains not mentioned) can also be a problem with those who have celiac disease.
If you think you have problems with grains and can’t quite figure out what’s making you feel so terrible, cut all grains out of your diet. To be sure, don’t eat anything processed or refined. Get rid of all the bags, cans, bottles, packages and boxes of food.
It’s the only way to be sure grain products or flour is not present unless you are an avid label reader who understands every name grain ingredients can disguise themselves as. Is gluten bad for you? It’s a shame it is so addicting and tastes so good.
Since we have no human requirement for grain, I would pass on it to be sure. But, if you still have to eat it, why not see how well you start feeling keeping it out of your diet for a week or two? You may begin feeling much better. If you reintroduce the culprit grain(s) into your diet again and your symptoms return, then you’ll know for sure which ones to avoid in the future.
