When I was trying to figure out what was wrong with me, (mysterious aches and pains all the time) I had to examine and compare ingredients in foods I ate to narrow down possibilities about what exactly was causing the problem.
From everything I had studied about right and wrong food, I concluded it had to be something wrong I was eating. I was eating foods triggering inflammation.
Of course, I started off looking closely at the obvious offenders like junk and snack foods. These are refined snacks like crackers, cookies and candy we all know and love.
And, what seemed to consistently show up when I was suffering bouts of pain and misery were ingredients like refined wheat, oils like palm and fructose.
I remember when I popped a bag of salted microwave popcorn that had palm oil in it that sent me into weeks of limping around the house in agony.
I used to eat salted popcorn with butter with my jack and coke to wash it all down. I discovered the combination of the fructose in the cola and buttery salty dairy, mixed with alcohol made with grain triggered my severe gout attacks.
You don’t want arthritis or gout symptoms, as they are the most painful experiences on the planet! Pain is a great motivator to change ones ways (I also gave up beer which is made with grain.) If you just have to drink alcohol, try a glass of wine once in a while. Wine is made with grapes, no grain. No grain (no gluten and lectin) less chance of inflammation.
Common foods and drink tend to cause inflammation in me (and, other people) like painful swelling and heat in joints and generalized fatigue and muscle pain.
The truth is it’s the food you are eating that can either make you well or cause you to suffer various ailments, conditions, eventually even disease.
Eating the standard American diet can and does kill us. No one has to tell us we have a national health crisis. Look at the commercials when you get home from work.
You see one commercial about medication, and then you view one directly behind it that wants you to eat food that’s causing your health problem to begin with.
What’s ironic is that the medication suppresses painful symptoms but doesn’t bring cure to the problem. More than that, you hear a host of side effects which outweigh any good the pill does.
In the meantime, if you can abstain from foods known to cause inflammation, you will likely see fairly immediate results. But, there are the more insidious foods you might have trouble putting your finger on.
For example, you might think (because we have been told over and over) that whole wheat bread is good for us. But, you may not realize you have a sensitivity to grains like wheat, barley, rye, corn and oats.
Do an experiment. Stop bread for a few days and see how you feel. Chances are, you will come to the conclusion you are better off without it.
Furthermore, you might be eating so called ‘gluten free’ foods like pasta [1 newsinhealth.nih.gov]’. More often than not, this has corn as a substitute for wheat. So, beware, corn is also a well known ‘offender’ as well as wheat.
You might want to discuss with your doctor first about monitoring you on an ‘elimination diet’. This is where you can figure out which foods are either causing you health problems and/or allergic reactions.
I did this the hard way all by myself. It took me years to learn what to eat and not. It usually takes weeks or a few months to figure out ‘culprit’ foods with guidance from your family physician.
