Reasons We Should All Stop Eating Meat

I wanted to explain some of the reasons why I stopped eating meat. If you’ve read my other articles, you know I believe in the notion that everything that tastes good isn’t necessarily good for you. Face it, we love eating and drinking what’s bad for us.

Why is this so? Mostly, human nature. Some of us are more self-destructive than others, especially men who I think usually would eat more volume of meat than women. This also means habit, tradition and custom. It’s the American standard diet we are all used to and love. But, the question is, is your food loving you back?

The poor cow, what did he and she ever do to hurt us? Nothing. But, when we drink its milk and eat its meat, the problems may very well begin for us. The cow’s revenge? Bad karma? Could be…

I’ll bet you know many who take some kind of medication and are always seeing their doctor because of some ailment, condition or disease. There is a reason. It very well could be the food they are eating.

Currently, I don’t crave meat anymore. As I am not a perfectionist and don’t live the perfect life, I still do eat meat upon occasion. These occasions are usually the holidays and birthdays. Who can turn down grandma’s turkey and pies? No one human. And, no one who wants to hurt granny’s feelings.

‘There was a time I consistently ate meat. I drank lots of milk, ate eggs and sausage for breakfast, hamburgers and fries with lunch, and a huge barbeque steak for dinner. And then, one day in my thirties, I ended up in the hospital with a ruptured appendix and almost died. This turned my thinking about what I was eating around one hundred and eighty degrees’ ~ your author

Firstly, the thing about meat is the idea going around that you can’t get enough protein eating fruits and vegetables. Not true at all. There is no way you will ever be protein deficient eating these. Matter of fact, the typical American diet usually provides around 20%, protein, often much more.

‘Mature human milk contains 3%–5% fat, 0.8%–0.9% protein, 6.9%–7.2% carbohydrate calculated as lactose, and 0.2% mineral constituents expressed as ash [1 ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/392766/]’.

Some of us have a problem consuming animal products like milk. For example, we may not be able to tolerate the lactose. Yes, those older than a baby do need more protein because of body weight, but we don’t need as much as the meat and dairy industry tells us. Remember, they want to sell their product. We are the ones who need to use our own judgement about what we put into our bodies.

‘Symptoms of lactose intolerance may include bloating, diarrhea, gas, nausea, and pain in your abdomen. Lactose intolerance is caused by lactose malabsorption, a condition in which your small intestine makes low levels of lactase and can’t digest all the lactose you eat or drink [2 niddk.nih.gov/health-information/digestive-diseases/lactose-intolerance]’.

I have stopped using all animal products because I don’t have a taste for them anymore. Animal products leave an after taste I don’t like anymore. But, as I have said earlier, I do upon a few occasions during the year, eat meat and use other animal products.

So, you can see the amount of protein in mother’s milk is lower compared to cow’s milk, which is ‘Normal bovine milk contains 30–35 grams of protein per liter of which about 80% is arranged in casein micelles. Total proteins in milk represent 3.2% of its composition [3 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milk]’.

There is ample protein in fruits and vegetables. Too much protein intake can cause osteoporosis, premature aging, liver problems, kidney failure and autoimmune disorders.

Valid reasons not to eat meat…

  • Everyone knows animal products have harmful cholesterol, added hormones, possible pesticide, maybe other unhealthful ingredients
  • Cruelty to animals and inhumane conditions
  • Deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions
  • ‘Red and processed meat intakes were associated with modest increases in total mortality, cancer mortality and CVD mortality [4 ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2803089/]’.

When we decide to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and add legumes like beans and grains like rice, we should be getting plenty of the right healthful protein our bodies were designed to thrive on. It has been proven people lose weight, get healthier and live longer eating plant-based whole food.
