Sticking to a Healthy Diet during the Holidays

This is how easy it is to slip up as a vegetarian and vegan: Before I knew it, I was eating green and black olives by the can full. I was also feeling bouts of inflammation in general all over my body. I didn’t figure out what the source was, even though it should have been obvious.

In truth, I had turned a blind eye to it because of my great love for olives. Our minds play tricks on us with food we know we shouldn’t eat. Now, I eat one green and one black sliced up on my daily salad for added flavor or I simply eat just one of each out of their can and bottle each day. No more than that. And, I am having no trouble sticking to it.

I don’t normally eat meat, but ‘fell’ to the temptation to a couple small turkey sandwiches with mustard on wheat sour dough bread during the holidays. In combination with all those olives, turkey and wheat, it only made my inflammation that much worse. Why was this so?

‘The classic sign of an autoimmune disease is inflammation, which can cause redness, heat, pain, and swelling [1]’.

Meat is foreign to the body and antibodies are made to attack it while these same antibodies also attack joints and muscle tissue. Apparently, antibodies can’t tell the difference between body parts and meat in the bloodstream. Consumption of animal products is known to cause inflammation.

Therefore, as an alternative to meat sandwiches during the holiday season, if we are vegetarian or vegan, we need to find a tasty substitute. Try an avocado, tomato and onion on sprouted wheat bread or homemade hummus spread on a toasted slice. Make sure it’s something you love, but also healthy to eat you won’t regret eating later.
