I have always loved the pungent taste of broccoli. But, I was introduced to it in those boiling bags smothered in cheese sauce. Sometimes, the health benefits of what you eat are neutralized by something added that is way too salty and oily. How do we fix this?

The healthiest way I know to eat broccoli is of course raw, say dipped in hummus. Realistically, most of us prefer it cooked. Lightly steamed is the best way, and it doesn’t take that long. For example, I steam it for about five minutes on the stove and judge its ‘done-ness’ by its color.

I cut its stems with a knife to test it because my wife likes it cooked ‘perfectly’. When I take it off the heat and set it on the counter for a minute, it’s done. That’s how I do it and it seems to work out exactly the same every time.

She picks out half of what she wants, then I get what’s left and throw it in my potato big bowl. Since I am the appointed cook in the kitchen, I like doing things simply. That’s how I eat…
