Does What You Eat And How You Cook It Reduce Aches, Pains And Inflammation? Yes, It May Even Eliminate It Entirely. What I Found…

You might be thinking one food is culprit to causing your inflammation, but you soon discover it could be one of many. It’s like a shell game wondering which one the prize is under. It gets confusing, sometimes. So, how does one pin point the problem? You asked a good question…

I have written a lot about grain, potatoes and rice as being questionable to eat at best. I try to be cautious with what I say, because I don’t want to mislead. But, when I write, it also helps me to learn or you could suggest sort out more accurately what’s true and not. I want to eat as much of the foods I like without having to rule out a whole food group. We don’t want to go hungry!

For example, I believed potatoes, rice and bread could all be possibly hurting me and causing me inflammation because of solanine, gluten, lectins and arsenic. And, the answer was also a resounding, yes.

‘I had cut out eating wheat, and all other grains including rice, even potatoes and was thinking about not eating beans and soy, too. But, would there have been anything left? Yes, there is, if you cook your rice, potatoes and beans in a pressure cooker. Doing so further reduces harmful lectins, although you can’t do anything about wheat, barley, rye, oats and corn except not eat them. Soy had to go, too. Yet, doubts still linger whether eating these are better for you or not…’ ~ your author

When you are ‘hungry’ and go shopping at the store, your stomach can take control of your mind and convince you into buying what you know you shouldn’t. So, it’s so important to not shop hungry and eat at least a snack before you food shop. I try to do this and it helps out a lot so I don’t buy a bag of chips or popcorn, etc..

‘I keep retesting, so lately I’ve been having a cup of organic coffee. I am thinking it was inflaming me because of the cream and sweetener I added to each cup. So, now I am adding coconut milk and Stevia. We’ll see what develops because coffee is supposed to be one of the notorious arthritis triggers. Yet, I am thinking the oily salty chips may have been one culprit, but made the mistake of eating peanut butter. This in itself exploded my inflammation throughout my body like one big painful hand grenade…’ ~ your author

Almost unconsciously, I fell into the trap of eating bags of chips once again. And, you save money buying the family sized bag. At least, that was the justification. As the story goes, my wife likes certain treats that aren’t necessarily good for her, and I do get those things she likes.

I always try to talk her out of it, but we all know if ones wife isn’t happy, she’s gonna find a way to make husband pay in one way or another. So, I end up ‘rationalizing’ getting a few bad things for me, too, so I also get ‘my treat’ or would you call it a ‘reward’?

My personal favorite has always been chips, not ice cream like my wife’s. Then, before you know it, your weight goes up and you are getting those old aches and pains and wondering why. Then, it dawned upon me. ‘Duh…’ I said to myself.

‘I knew palm oil caused me inflammation as well as soy sauce. Later on, I also learned too much tahini and even less peanut butter did… These two are high in Omega 6. So, I decided to give up peanut butter, but keep tahini low. I have to remember to keep refined oils out of my diet. Avoiding processed and refined foods will help do most of it. But, when we stumble, pain will be our reality check’! ~ your author

All of a sudden I started getting inflammation all over my body and especially in my feet. I knew I blew my diet straight down to the fiery flames below. All of a sudden (and, before I knew it 6 months had passed! Wow, how time flies!) I was eating bags and bags of chips once more. It did though take months for inflammation to show its ugly head throughout my whole body.

‘Excessive amounts of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and a very high omega-6/omega-3 ratio, as is found in today’s Western diets, promote the pathogenesis of many diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, whereas increased levels of omega-3 PUFA (a low omega-6/omega-3 ratio) exert suppressive effects [1 ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12442909]’.

As you likely know, chips are salty and very oily. Tasty, to say the least. In the beginning of my weight loss journey, that’s what got me stuck at 185 lbs. down from over 200. And, once I cut them out, I steadily began to lose weight once again. Old habits die hard. And, sometimes they return with a vengeance.

‘Sometimes you may feel like no matter what you eat it’s wrong. But, then you could listen to those TV personalities who you are never quite sure they know what they are talking about when it comes to weight loss, health and long life. It’s a good idea to pay attention to how healthy and trim they look. This especially goes for experts and doctors…’ ~ your author

As I already knew, but somehow forgot, the oils they make potato and corn chips with are refined. Furthermore, they have plenty of Omega 6. This oil especially from what I’ve heard and from my own experience causes inflammation. Examples, are corn, safflower, sunflower, and soybean oil.

‘When you get the willpower to avoid foods which are refined and processed, especially snacks and junk foods, you are on your way losing weight, and watching those mysterious aches and pains gradually disappear…’ ~ your author

Lately, I have been adding ground Flaxseed to our smoothies because it has Omega 3 as well as sprinkling Chia seeds (I found out chia seeds have lectins, so I discontinued it as of this writing) on fruit I eat at night when hungry.

I also make sure I eat a few avocados each week which I believe have a better balance of Omega 6 versus Omega 3 fatty acids. You might want to try wrapping the avocado slices within a lettuce leaf instead of between two slices of bread.

‘I have read from reliable sources the oil in olives, nuts in moderation and avocados are OK because they are plant based whole food, not processed or refined. Just be sure to limit them in your diet for best heart health and weight stabilization. Remember, even though healthy fat may be good for you, that too much is the fat you are going to wear…’ ~ your author

I just have to say that you must listen to your body, because if you eliminate a whole food group, you may be depriving yourself of vital nutrition and eating enjoyment.
