Why You Need Polyphenols And What Foods They Are In…

Polyphenols are amazing. Why? They do many beneficial healthful things for you. Does this mean we should adopt a Mediterranean diet and drizzle extra virgin olive oil with no limit? Maybe, maybe not.

Everywhere else I’ve heard not to use any refined oils. Olives and olive oil have polyphenols. But, I have found there are other sources just as good…

Yet, Polyphenols are one good reason to eat certain foods. If you have doubts about the healthfulness of ingesting large amounts of olive oil to get your daily polyphenols, there are a multitude of other plant based sources which I feel are just as good.

For example, you can get polyphenols in green tea, red grapes (you don’t have to drink red wine to get it,) coffee,  dark chocolate, berries, flax seeds, whole grains, olives and olive oil, and nuts, seeds, legumes, and other fruits and vegetables.

Polyphenols can neutralize harmful free radicals that can damage cells. This can increase the risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Polyphenols can also reduce the chance of inflammation, which is believed by many reputable sources to cause numerous ailments, conditions and diseases.

There are actually thousands of polyphenols, so your sources are varied. They may aid in lowering blood sugar levels, risk of heart disease, reduce chronic inflammation, lower bad cholesterol levels in the blood, reduce chance of blood clots, reduce risk of cancers, help improve digestion, and may improve memory. But, that’s not where it ends…

I am not a physician, but don’t take vitamins or supplements other than vitamin B12. I get my vitamin D from sitting outside in the sun. I used to take vitamin pills in my twenties, but I learned they were poisonous to my system and stopped.

From my experience eating plant based whole food, I say eat the food instead of taking vitamin pills and supplements. I lost 50 pounds, haven’t gained a pound back, feel better and likely will live longer. I am 68. I am living proof a plant based diet works wonders.

As for polyphenol rich foods like beans, which have lectins, I always pressure cook them. This also goes for rice and potatoes, which are two of three of my staple diet essentials.
