How Do We Know If We Will Live To 100 And Beyond?

This is a question that does not have a definitive answer. Yet, I don’t know who else besides us would ever know how long we ourselves will live. Where on earth are the longest living people?

‘Can we look into a crystal ball? Do we really want to know how long we will live…’?

I always wanted to live until I was 100. But, this was a childhood wish. I watched the years were going by when growing up and ‘hoped’ I would eventually see life over 100. But, how can we ever know how long we will live, yet would we really want to continue when suffering pain and disease? I think not…

‘Some who retire do so because of ill health and spend the last 20 years of their lives in and out of the hospital. Who in their right mind would ever want that…’?

So, what are the statistics in the US on how long the average person lives?

‘Now people in the United States live about 80 years on average, but some individuals survive for much longer [1]’.

I wonder how many of those people are in good health? Nevertheless, I have found that food and drink makes me feel good or bad. I try to keep eating and drinking that which makes me feel healthy. I think how happy you are and how good you feel is a good indicator about how long your life will be…

“People born in the U.S. today can expect to live to an average age of about 79. A century ago, life expectancy was closer to 54. ‘We’ve had a significant increase in lifespan over the last century,’ says Dr. Marie Bernard, deputy director of NIH’s National Institute on Aging. ‘Now if you make it to age 65, the likelihood that you’ll make it to 85 is very high. And if you make it to 85, the likelihood that you’ll make it to 92 is very high. So people are living longer, and it’s happening across the globe [2]”.

I really believe our best health and increased lifespan rests upon eating a 80-90% plant based whole food diet. Additionally, I believe there are other factors to increased life span such as thinking positive, love, a social life, family, pets, hobbies, and a job one loves doing.

‘Older people tend to be healthier nowadays, too. Research has shown that healthful behaviors can help you stay active and healthy into your 60s, 70s, and beyond. In fact, a long-term study of Seventh-day Adventists—a religious group with a generally healthy lifestyle—shows that they tend to remain healthier into old age. Their life expectancy is nearly 10 years longer on average than most Americans. The Adventists’ age-enhancing behaviors include regular exercise, a vegetarian diet, avoiding tobacco and alcohol, and maintaining a healthy weight [3]’.

Everything I have studied points to eating a plant based whole food diet for weight loss, better health and longer life. Therefore, I would never recommend  increased eating of notoriously unhealthy foods like doughnuts, burgers and pizza.

To conclude, we can increase our chance of living healthier and longer by choosing our foods more carefully. Yet, as I have personally experienced, it does take willpower because the temptation of eating wrong foods surrounds us wherever we may look.
