What exactly is plant based whole food? I am glad you asked! This is a very good question that needs a good answer. Here’s how Wikipedia defines it, and I couldn’t do a better job of it myself…
‘A plant-based diet is a diet consisting mostly or entirely of foods derived from plants, including vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, legumes and fruits, and with few or no animal products ’.
This diet is very different from a vegetarian or vegan diet. They both eat processed and refined food. On a plant based whole food diet, one tries to avoid this practice.
Attaining better health, losing weight healthily and living longer is a learning process. In the beginning of my better health seeking journey three or more decades ago, I remember going to health food stores buying vitamins, soy based products and other so called ‘healthier food substitutes’, tasting terrible! But, I also found out later the ‘fake meat’ products and many others weren’t really that healthy to eat. I didn’t know any better and was fooled by media advertising.
‘The exponential rise in the cost of health care since the 1980s in the US is unsustainable. It is estimated that more than 70% of health care dollars are spent addressing the result of unhealthy lifestyles that are increasing the rates of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. There is also a severe and worsening epidemic of physician burnout in the US, which threatens the health of physicians and patients alike. In this article, I share why I believe a whole-foods, plant-based diet is a powerful prescription for optimal health and the answer to health, health care, and physician wellness ’.
Knowing what ingredients is in food you eat is key to weight loss, better health and ones own longevity. Therefore, if one eats his majority of diet as intact fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds, nuts and beans, he will not have an ingredient list to read. He can add spices and salt to make his intact meals taste better if he so desires.
‘I used to take vitamin pills in my twenties, but found out later on in life they are poisonous to our bodies. All I take now is B12‘
But, I severely limit certain things like refined oils, even olive oil. I don’t drink soft drinks and don’t use any sweeteners, even natural ones like honey. I also know that potato chips aren’t a health food, but they sure taste good, being very addictive! Who can just eat one? Not me… This also goes for chocolate bars.
“Consuming alcohol isn’t a ‘health drink’ no matter what else is in it”
No matter what they say about healthy ingredients within processed and refined food, you can get superior nutrients elsewhere: from plant based whole food. For example, they say drinking red wine is healthy because of the polyphenols, but you can eat red or purple grapes without the alcohol and get plenty of it there. Don’t let the wine sellers fool you. If you must drink, at least know the truth.
