Best diet for longevity: Why your mother told you to eat your ‘veggies’

What is the best diet for longevity? In my opinion, it is a way of eating and lifestyle you adopt keeping you the happiest and healthiest. With the many healthful results I’ve experienced, I wouldn’t suggest any other way of eating except a whole food plant based diet.

What if you want to live to 100 and beyond? There are no guarantees. You won’t know until you get there. Life is full of surprises. But, one thing about those who become centenarians is that they seem to have friends and family, are engaging, having a positive attitude in general, are friendly toward others and have their own philosophy about life. I also haven’t seen any obese 100 year olds.

I think healthy eating only does so much. You must have friendships and love. No man is an island! Because, if you aren’t a happy camper who is also ‘oh so lonely’, I don’t think that makes one live longer. Things that could likely add many more years to your life…

  • Keep active
  • Don’t smoke or use drugs
  • Keep alcohol to none or minimum
  • Reduce salt
  • Avoid processed and refined foods
  • Love what you do for a living
  • Get hobbies
  • You don’t have to pump iron
  • Eat plant based whole food (low in fat and sugar)
  • Avoid animal products
  • Think positive
  • Learn to meditate for reducing stress
  • Get and keep friends
  • Have close family ties
  • Maybe, get a pet or two

In parts of Japan people live longer. Their traditional diet has mostly vegetables and small amounts of meat. When they adopt more of a western diet, they end up like us with various diseases, ailments and conditions. Also, the seventh day Adventists with a sizeable population residing in Loma Linda, Ca. live longer, too. The adventists are primarily vegetarian or vegan. So, what they eat varies. But, they do try to avoid processed foods, sugar and additives.

Adopting a vegetarian diet can reduce your risk of…

  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Obesity
  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
