Maintaining Healthy Micro-Biome: Leaky Gut Syndrome/Autoimmune Disease Connection

I believe I’ve had a so called leaky gut in the past. That’s why I had aches and pains all over. I had RA symptoms (Rheumatoid Arthritis.) I also have suffered from Gout. And, I have to be careful what I eat and drink, because the agony can return with a vengeance. For me, certain things I eat have a ‘yes and no’ label on them.

In comparison, commercials on TV advertise medications. And, although they may do one good suppression of symptoms, I have never heard of a prescription that didn’t cause potentially dangerous side effects.

‘More than 80 diseases occur as a result of the immune system attacking the body’s own organs, tissues, and cells. Some of the more common autoimmune diseases include type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and inflammatory bowel disease [1]’.

What I do to Maintain Healthy Micro-Biome: To help prevent Leaky Gut Syndrome/Autoimmune Disease…

  • Once in a while coffee (is acidic and it’s oils kill beneficial bacteria in the gut. Coffee beans also have about a thousand substances in it that need further study)
  • Not often, alcohol
  • I drink Japanese green tea everyday
  • I drink filtered water from my refrigerator with lime
  • But, I let it sit so any residual chlorine evaporates
  • I don’t eat animal products (only special occasions)
  • I pressure cook rice, potatoes and other nightshade vegetables and legumes to reduce potency of lectins
  • I buy organic fruits and vegetables when available: EWG_FN-2020_Guide
  • I don’t eat wheat, barley, rye, oats, corn (lectins and gluten) and other grains except for white rice and occasional millet
  • I do not use refined oils

‘A leaky gut has been observed in a number of autoimmune diseases including type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and systemic lupus erythematosus. Previous studies from our laboratory have shown that lupus mice also bear a leaky gut and that the intestinal barrier function can be enhanced by gut colonization of probiotics such as Lactobacillus spp [2]’.

You don’t want to eat or drink things causing damage to intestinal lining. Then, substances which shouldn’t be in the blood stream are distributed throughout the body causing painful inflammation and more.

What works for me avoiding inflammation is eating 80-90% plant based whole food. But, one has to be careful eating healthfully making the right food choices the other 10-20% of the time: List of Acid/Alkaline Foods
